Plant Variety Overview
Banksia integrifolia, commonly known as Coast Banksia or Honeysuckle Banksia, is one of Australia's most versatile and widely distributed native trees. This striking evergreen delivers exceptional year-round visual interest through its distinctive dark green foliage with luminous silvery-white undersides, golden-yellow cylindrical flower spikes that bloom from autumn through spring, and sculptural woody seed pods that persist long after flowering.
The tree naturally forms an upright, single-trunked specimen with unique branching.
The contrast between dark and silver leaf surfaces is particularly striking on windy days when the canopy moves.
Banksia integrifolia is renowned for its exceptional hardiness, adaptability, and ability to thrive in coastal conditions where many plants struggle. It tolerates salt spray, wind, poor soils, and light frost, making it invaluable for challenging sites.
This low-maintenance native is equally at home in residential homes, coastal gardens, parks, streetscapes, and revegetation projects across temperate and warm Australian regions.
Why You'll Love It

> Striking Foliage Display: Dark green leaves with luminous silvery-white undersides create a beautiful contrast, particularly on breezy days.
> Highly Adaptable Native: Grows in clay, sand, acid and alkaline soils. One of the few Banksias with excellent resistance to Phytophthora cinnamomi (root rot fungus) that affects many native species
> Coastal Champion: Outstanding salt and wind tolerance makes this tree perfect for frontline coastal positions where conventional ornamentals fail.
> Exceptional Wildlife Value: Nectar-rich flowers attract honeyeaters, native birds, bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Provides food and habitat for wildlife throughout the growing season
> Low-Maintenance Specimen: Once established, requires minimal care beyond light pruning after flowering
> Drought tolerant & Light Frost tolerant and adaptable to diverse growing conditions
> Moderately Fast Growth Rate: In warm coastal positions with regular water, delivering substantial presence relatively quickly compared to slower-growing native species
> Popular Landscaping Choice: Very popular to use as a street tree, feature trees, coastal & contemporary garden design. Valued by landscape professionals for reliability, hardiness, and their architectural form
> Ornamental Cut Flowers: Golden flower spikes and decorative seed pods are ideal for floral arrangements and dried displays, extending the plant's utility beyond the garden

Growing Guide
Climate & Hardiness: Thrives in temperate, subtropical, Mediterranean, and warm-temperate climates across the East Coast of Australia from Queensland through to Victoria. Tolerates light frost however young plants benefit from frost protection in cooler regions during their first winters. Performs exceptionally well in humid coastal environments where many native Western Australian Banksias struggle.
Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to part shade. Full sun positions maximize flowering and foliage colour.
Soil Requirements: Highly adaptable to diverse soil types including sandy, clay, loam, and even poor soils. Prefers well-drained conditions but tolerates various pH levels from acid through neutral to alkaline. Excellent for coastal sandy soils and stabilising dunes.
Water Management: Water deeply and regularly during establishment phase (first 12-18 months). Once established, moderately drought tolerant with occasional supplementary watering during extended dry periods. Prefers dry conditions during summer and performs better in well-drained soils than waterlogged sites.
Wind & Coastal Tolerance: Outstanding wind and salt spray resistance. One of the few native trees recommended for frontline coastal positions where wind and salt exposure eliminate most ornamentals. Develops strong form in exposed locations.
Pest & Disease Management: Generally very hardy with few significant pests or disease issues. Excellent resistance to Phytophthora cinnamomi (a major threat to many Banksia species). Occasional issues with stem borers or psyllids, but usually pest-free. Avoids problems common to many native species, making it reliable for diverse sites.
Pruning & Maintenance: Responds well to light pruning after flowering to maintain neat growth and encourage ongoing flowering. Can be kept more compact through light pruning of growing tips. Avoid heavy pruning into old wood, which may result in limited regrowth and permanent damage. Light tip-pruning maintains shape and promotes denser foliage. Generally low-maintenance once established.
