This Australian native evergreen delivers a rounded canopy with glossy foliage, fragrant summer flowers, and decorative peeling bark—all in a compact, dense form.

The Luscious cultivar represents a significant improvement over the species, with foliage nearly double the size of standard Tristaniopsis laurina.  Mature leaves display deep glossy green upper surfaces with paler undersides, while distinctive copper-bronze or reddish new growth provides continuous colour interest throughout the growing season. 

Fragrant golden-yellow flower clusters appear from late spring through summer (November–January), attracting honeyeaters, native birds, and bees.

Growing Guide

Climate & Hardiness: Ideally suited to temperate, subtropical, Mediterranean, and coastal climates across the East Coast from Queensland through Victoria. Moderately frost tolerant once established, tolerating down to approximately -6°C. Performs exceptionally well in humid coastal environments. Not recommended for very hot, dry inland areas exposed to hot winds without regular irrigation. Young plants are more frost-sensitive—protect during first 1-2 winters in cooler regions.

Light Requirements: Full sun to part shade. Full sun positions promote maximum growth, foliage colour expression, and flowering. Part shade is tolerated but results in more open growth and reduced floral display.

Soil Requirements: Prefers fertile, moist, well-drained soils enriched with organic matter. Adaptable to clay, loam, sandy, and sandy-loam soils. Excellent drainage is important to prevent root rot in waterlogged conditions. Will tolerate poor soils once established.

Water Management: Water deeply and regularly during establishment phase (first 12-18 months) to encourage strong root development. Once established, moderately drought tolerant with occasional supplementary watering during extended dry periods. Performs better with adequate moisture—does not thrive in very dry conditions without irrigation. Tolerates both coastal humidity and moderate drought but prefers warm, moist environments.

Coastal & Wind Tolerance: Good coastal exposure tolerance including salt spray and wind. Ideal for coastal gardens and wind-exposed positions. Does not suit exposure to hot, dry winds without regular watering.

Fertiliser Requirements: Light feeding in spring and summer encourages vigour and flowering. Use slow-release native fertiliser (avoid high-phosphorus formulations). Apply mulch annually to retain moisture and enrich soil.

Pest & Disease Management: Generally very hardy with few significant pest or disease issues. Occasionally subject to scale insects or spider mites in very hot, dry conditions, manage with water spray or horticultural oil. Root rot possible in poorly drained, waterlogged soils so ensure excellent drainage. Overall a robust, healthy species with few management concerns.

Pruning & Maintenance: Light pruning after flowering promotes new growth, maintains shape, and encourages ongoing flowering. Can be shaped more formally than species form due to dense branching. Avoid heavy pruning into old wood. Generally low-maintenance once established. Remove dead branches and thin as needed to maintain form.
